Celebrating Volunteers from Woodberry Downs
On the 26th November 2011 we held a Volunteer Celebration Event at the new Redmond Community Centre at Woodberry Down with the aim of recognising the achievements and commitments of the volunteers on the Woodberry Down Volunteer Programme. These are residents of the estate who are currently volunteering having found their placement by using VCH’s on-site brokerage. The volunteers were presented with certificates and awards and some gave a talk on their experiences of volunteering and how they felt that they had benefited from their placements, with all of them reporting an increase in confidence. For many of them this was their first experience of public speaking, just one of the new challenges and experiences volunteering can bring. The event was open to members of the public and organisations that recruit volunteers were there to answer any questions from residents interested in getting involved. Visitors also had the chance to talk to the current volunteers and the scheme co-ordinator about what it is really like to be a volunteer. The event was funded and supported by Genesis housing association, who also fund the whole project.
