Share your passion for literature and reading by volunteering with The Reader and Hackney Libraries and bring people together through great stories and poems.
Reader Leader volunteers are needed to lead shared reading groups in libraries and community centres across the borough with elderly people who may struggle to get out. Older people and the vulnerable are prone to loneliness and social isolation – and it can have a serious effect on health. The Reader helps to try and overcome this by creating a safe and welcoming group for all to participate, bringing books to life and developing meaningful relationships.
Weekly tales read aloud often encourage individuals to share their own stories. This is, in part, the power of Shared Reading – to stir thoughts and memories, to give words to something already thought or felt but not yet expressed.
Volunteers get a fully funded three-day training course and ongoing support. Drop in for a tester session at Hackney Central Library this Tuesday 27 August or 3 September and find out more!
When: Tuesday 27 August, 6pm to 7pm and Tuesday 3 September, 11am to 12pm
Where: Hackney Central Library, Hackney Technology and Learning Centre, 1 Reading Lane, E8 1GQ
Tea, coffee and a good time provided!
