Trustees’ Week 2024: “Being a Trustee has been a really empowering experience.”

Can you guess how many people volunteer as trustees in the UK? Well, there are almost one million trustees across the UK who help their charities make decisions, secure funding and much more.

That’s why Trustees’ Week (4 – 8 November) is a great time to celebrate them and shine a light on the difference these volunteers make in Hackney. If that’s got you interested in joining our board, now is your time to act!

Want to make a difference in Hackney?
Being a trustee is a wonderful thing to do, says our trustee Olivia Fuller: “If you love Hackney as much as I do, then consider giving back by using your skills and experience in a really meaningful way. Organisations need people on their boards from all walks of life and with varied lived experiences, so don’t rule yourself out. I was super hesitant to go for it, being only 29 and 8 years into my career, but I’ve learnt that there’s lots I can bring as a younger voice… [it] has helped me boost my professional confidence no end.”

Worried you don’t have any experience?

No problem. Charities need trustees with a broad mix of skills and experience to help deliver their services as widely as possible. Your track record could be from education, personal life, or of course volunteering! So long as you’ve got the interest and enthusiasm, that’s what counts. With Hackney’s residents being from so many diverse communities, organisations are also keen to recruit people from Black, Asian, and other Global Majority backgrounds as well as people with disabilities and health conditions.

Why become a trustee?

VCH trustee Phil Gray said: “Being a trustee is incredibly rewarding. If you’re interested in the betterment of your local community and feel you have skills, knowledge, or experience that could support the governance of a local charity, you would be an ideal candidate to be a trustee.”

Trustee Behrouz Bayat added: “It’s incredibly rewarding to make an impact at the community level, you are helping to make a meaningful difference to the lives of people in your area. Being part of a board of trustees is also a great way to gain experience and valuable skills in governance and strategic decision-making.”
