CHC, delivered in partnership by Volunteer Centre Hackney and the City & Hackney Public Health teams, comprises more than 200 Champions and 85+ voluntary, community, faith sectors and statutory organisations within City and Hackney, who work together to create more positive health outcomes for residents.

The programme achieves this by training and supporting local residents, and developing the capacity of services to give voice to diverse, under-represented local communities and reduce health inequalities

Grant recipients showcased how they will use the grants to strengthen and deepen their participation in the CHC programme and, in turn, have a greater impact on their organisations, themselves as individuals, on their service users and local residents. Examples of activities the grant recipients will undertake include:

● Designing, translating and printing tailored communications
● Conducting community research and insight gathering
● Hosting community events, activities and awareness raising/learning sessions
● Covering staff costs to enable Community Champions based within voluntary and community organisations to actively engage in forums, peer support session and training in support of the Champion role
● Supporting volunteer expenses for community members giving their time as volunteers

“Since the beginning of the CHC programme in 2020, Champions have helped transform barriers into bridges between health organisations and their service users and residents,” said Joanne Hunt, CHC Programme Manager, Volunteer Centre Hackney. “Whether it’s information around vaccinations, cancer screening, physical activity or long-term health conditions, Champions help to identify why people may not engage with health services and how health services may adapt their approach and services, enabling City & Hackney residents to feel more considered, comfortable, and confident when engaging with health services.”
