Whether you’ve got one hour a month or a day per week, there are so many different ways to get involved with your local community. You’ll be able to talk to local charities and hear directly from them about the amazing work they do and the type of volunteering roles they have. Some of the charities who will be there on the day include the following:
- Carers UK provide support and advocacy services and connect unpaid carers across Hackney and the country, so that no one has to care alone.
- Family Action Social Prescribing offer a supportive service that aims to help people by reducing isolation and improving wellbeing through access to community services.
- Hackney Caribbean Elderly Organisation support over 55s in the local community by providing services and delivering tailored projects to address loneliness and isolation.
- Harmonize Café is a musical social enterprise which aims to engage individuals in the community by providing live music events and hosting community lunches within their café in Stoke Newington.
- Housing Justice run a mentoring and befriending scheme to help ex-rough sleepers achieve their personal goals through the systematic support of valued mentors and befrienders.
- Lee Valley Regional Park Authority – stretching an incredible 26 miles through parts of East London, the organisation’s vision is to protect and enhance the award-winning park’s character as well as to encourage widespread use of the park and its facilities.
- Mary’s Meals provide school meals to children living in some of the world’s poorest communities. In Hackney they run activities and sessions to raise funds and awareness about their work.
- Read Easy offers free one-to-one reading coaching to adults who want to learn to read.
- Salvation Army in Mare Street runs a weekly programme of groups and activities for all age groups with the aim of supporting the local Hackney community.
- St Joseph’s Hospice Hackney runs activities centred around the care and support of terminally ill people and their carers and families.
- The Kids Network provide mentoring programmes to connect young children with inspiring local heroes to help them build confidence, resilience, and emotional strength.
- V&A East provides opportunities for creativity and champions design and creativity in all its forms.
- Victim Support -provide specialist services to help people manage after crime and empower them to have their voices heard.
